Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about School of Mathematic Excellence’s maths tuition, classes and general information.

  • We offer classes for secondary school students from Year 7 up to Year 13, covering a full range of abilities from Key Stage 3, through GCSE, and onto A Level maths.

  • Group tuition offers an engaging, collaborative learning environment at an affordable price, while 1:1 tuition provides fully personalised support tailored to your child’s specific needs, ideal for those requiring intensive help or with SEND.

  • Yes, spaces are very limited due to high demand. We recommend early booking to secure a place, as we are full every year.

  • Absolutely. Our tutors have experience supporting students with a range of SEND needs and can help with tailored learning plans, exam access arrangements, and can provide evidence to support SEND referrals.

  • We cover all major UK exam boards for GCSE/IGCSE and A Level maths, including Edexcel, AQA & OCR.

  • We run intensive revision courses during Christmas, Easter, and May half term to help students prepare for mock and final exams. Classes are small, and sessions run across multiple days to ensure deep understanding and retention.

  • While we encourage students to have their cameras on to help maintain engagement and create a more interactive environment, we understand this isn’t always comfortable or possible for everyone. To support focus and reduce distractions, we use Zoom’s Focus Mode during group sessions.

In Focus Mode, the tutor can see all students at once, but students cannot see each other — only the tutor. For the student, this creates a learning experience similar to a 1:1 session, helping them engage directly with the tutor without feeling self-conscious about being watched by their peers. This way, students can fully concentrate on the lesson. Additionally, students can use the chat box to ask questions or participate if they prefer not to use the microphone, ensuring everyone feels comfortable contributing.

  • All payments are made securely via GoCardless Direct Debit, allowing for simple, automatic monthly payments. This method is safe, convenient, and helps ensure uninterrupted access to your child’s tuition sessions.

  • We’re happy to advise! Contact us for a free consultation so we can understand your child’s needs and recommend the most suitable tuition option.

  • We offer a range of classes throughout the week (both daytime and evening) to fit around school, sixth form and family schedules. Group classes run on set days and times, while 1:1 sessions are more flexible and scheduled individually to suit your availability. Get in touch for our current availability.

  • We use Zoom for all our online tuition sessions. Zoom is easy to use and widely accessible on computers, tablets, and smartphones. Before your first class, we’ll send you a link along with simple instructions to join the session. Our tutors guide students throughout, ensuring a smooth and interactive learning experience. If you ever have any technical questions, our team is here to help.

  • We understand how important it is to try before you commit. Due to high demand, we prioritise families booking permanent spaces, but if there’s availability when you enquire, we’ll gladly arrange a trial session so your child can experience our teaching first-hand.

  • Our regular sessions follow term time only, and we teach for 38 weeks per year, with breaks during half terms.
We can usually offer extra sessions during half term if requested – though these are completely optional and not necessary for keeping up with the regular programme.

Please note that our local term dates may differ from your child’s school holidays, so do check our dates here.
